Commercial Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) can achieve a certain level of autonomous driving on a motorway using functions such as Smart Cruise Control (SCC) and Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS). The next step is to enable the vehicle to change lanes in traffic in order to maintain a desired speed. A part of making this reality is coming up with an algorithm that chooses when to change lanes. The designers also need to decide on where to place the lidar sensors.
