Title: Rudder in a Month (RiaM): An Automated ModelCenter Workflow for Aircraft Design
Abstract : As a tier 1 supplier, Fokker Aerostructures needs to be able to quickly respond to market demands from aircraft integrators. To distinguish itself in the current competitive market environment, Fokker needs to be able to rapidly respond to new product opportunities and apply innovative technologies in the offered solutions, resulting in more lightweight designs that can be manufactured at lower cost. Current design process of sizing a rudder is manual, time intensive, and uses a heterogenous tool set as a result only a couple of design alternatives can be investigated. To address these challenges Fokker has created a program called Rudder in a Month (RiaM). The objective is to take a typical component, an aircraft rudder and develop it within a single month instead two years that it takes currently. A ModelCenter integrated design workflow has been created as part of this project. It automates the design of a rudder from geometry analysis to computing residual factors for material strength, joint strength and stability.
